IN PLAIN ENGLISH

What it does.
Why it matters.

Motion should explain the idea, not bury it. Video Studio separates the scene, its timing and the rendered output so each part can be inspected.

The scene describes what to draw at a given moment. The renderer steps through those moments and assembles the frames into a video. Optional stills and contact sheets make it easier to inspect a render without watching it from beginning to end.
